There’s not a culture in this world that does not have customs or rituals that concern the passing of a loved one. It’s like we instinctively know that loss is something deeply personal and something to give importance to-- whether it may be to say goodbye to the departed or to get support from close friends or family.

How we honour the dead

Many funerals and ceremonies related to it are closely tied to a person or family’s religion. Today, the world’s largest religious group is Christianity, which makes up a sum total of over 2 billion adherents around the world. As a result, Christian memorial services are some of the most common funeral rites that one might witness.

Interestingly enough, like most of the major religious groups today, Christianity is further subdivided into sects, groups, or denominations which may make funeral services differ from each other. If you’re considering funeral packages, seeing how other Christian denominations hold their funerals can be interesting to note. Let’s check out a few of them.

The different denominations and how they hold funerals

  1. Orthodox Christians. They prohibit cremations for religious reasons, though embalming is accepted. After the wake is the funeral service, in which candles are lighted and an offering is placed.
  2. Catholics. Catholic funeral packages used to exclude cremation, but has been recently allowed by the Vatican. Burials are more common.
  3. Protestants. Unlike the first two, most Protestants opt for cremation. Their funeral services are generally less ritualistic.
